Zhang Guangrong, the vice governor of Qinghai province, has disclosed to local media that a special team has been set up in the province to monitor the use of relief funds donated for the Yushu earthquake.
According to local media, Qinghai has received a total of about CNY8 billion in cash and in-kind donations for Yushu earthquake relief, and more donations are still on the way. Zhang explained that the province has taken three measures, including establishing a special team to monitor and keep track of the use of the relief funds, issuing rules on the management of the relief funds, and setting up a team to conduct on-site monitoring and audits of the use of the funds.
Zhang said that the April 14 earthquake has caused serious destruction to Yushu and people are suffering not only loss of family members but also from severe damage to public infrastructure. Zhang stated that as Yushu is located on a high altitude plateau, the disaster relief and reconstruction of the area will be a great challenge.
The 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Yushu, Qinghai Province on April 14, 2010 left 2,203 dead as at 17:00 April 24, 2010.
