According to the website of the China National Tourism Administration, a low-carbon tourism zone as been established in Miyun county that is claimed to be the first of its kind.
So far the travel pattern has been altered in the experimental zone to reduce the carbon impact of travel.
The low-carbon tourism experimental zone is located at the north shore of the Miyun Reservoir which has been designated as a core region for Miyun's ecological conservation and is intended to have a direct impact on the construction of Beijing's ecology. According to Guo Lixin, the director of the Miyun Tourism Bureau, there will not be any major energy consuming or high emission tourism facilities in the zone, instead, there will only be village inns which will be encouraged to adopt alternative energy technology such as solar power and bio-energy and reduce the consumption of amenities.
The experimental zone also offers bicycle and camping services to facilitate tourists' low-carbon trips. In addition tourists can choose to plant trees or sponsor an area of forest to compensate for the carbon they consume during their trip.
