More than 30 people in Hunan have been detained for smoking in "dangerous" public places.
All these people are said to have smoked in places vulnerable to fire or explosion such as petrol filling stations and storehouses. The Hunan fire department said that people smoking in public places like shopping malls, bars, Internet cafes, and parks wouldn't be detained if no serious consequence has been caused by their acts.
It is learned that a national campaign will be carried out from August 10 to October 8, 2009 to ensure the security of China's National Day celebrations. The campaign will mainly focus on smoking in such venues as petrol filling stations and storehouses.
On August 29, a man surnamed Zhao was detained when he was found smoking at Jinhaiyang Wholesale Market in Chongqing, and he became the first person to be detained for smoking in public places in that city.
