A representative from the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau has disclosed to the local media that, as at June 30, 2009, Beijing had controlled and eliminated a total of 82,503 high pollution vehicles.
It is learned that the owners of 40,639 high pollution vehicles had also received subsidies to stop using the environmentally-unfriendly automobiles by that date.
Du Shaozhong, the deputy director of BMEPB, told the media that the elimination of high pollution vehicles was accelerated in June with the disposal of 23,129 vehicles in the month, 2.5 times the number for May and 3.2 times that of the first five months of the year.
It is learned that various models of trucks and mini buses were the main targets for elimination, accounting for 85% of the total number of vehicles removed.
