Five departments in Xi'an are jointly calling on government departments and residents of the city to drive one day less each week to protect the environment.
The five departments are said to be the Xi'an Municipal Propaganda Department, the Xi'an Municipal Environment Protection Bureau, the Xi'an Municipal Reform and Development Commission, the Xi'an Municipal Transporation Bureau, and the Xi'an Municipal Traffic Police Department. Together, they propose that government bodies, social entities, and business undertakings of the city take the lead by driving less. The schedules they propose are: official cars with the suffix numbers "1" and "6" stop driving on Monday, those with the suffix numbers "2" and "7" on Tuesday, those with "3" and "8" on Wednesday, those with "4" and "9" on Thursday, and those with "5" and "0" on Friday.
In addition, they also call on other units and ordinary car owners to follow the above rules and drive one day less per week.
