China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has published a list of substandard food and cosmetics.
A total of 159 imported products, which cover dairy products, candy, biscuits, wine, and other food materials, have appeared on the list. Among these, are two batches of whey protein powder, totaling 37 tons, imported by the Beingmate Group from the United States, and 5.2 tons of whey protein powder imported by the Wahaha Healthcare Food Company from New Zealand. Both batches were found to contain enterobacter sakazakii.
AQSIQ said that the problems with all these food and cosmetics were identified at the entry port, so they were either returned, destroyed, or used for other purposes.
Enterobacter sakazakii is a rod-shaped pathogenic bacterium. It can cause invasive infection for newborn babies and can trigger colonitis, blood poisoning, and meningitis.
