China-based Huawei Technologies, a global telecommunications network solutions supplier, has joined the Global e-Sustainability Initiative, an environmental protection organization in the information and communication technology sector.
As the only Asian member in GeSI, Huawei hopes to play a strategic role in driving environmental protection strategies, implementation measures, technical standards, and public policies that may affect the development of the global ICT industry with its peers in the communication industry.
"We deeply appreciate Huawei's commitments on environmental protection and also value the achievements Huawei has made in this field," said Luis Neves, chairman of the board of GeSI and head of sustainability and environment at Deutsche Telekom, upon welcoming Huawei into the organization. "As people around the world are becoming increasingly concerned about global warming and environmental problems, world-leading ICT companies like Huawei, by promoting green communication through the development of energy saving and emission-reduction technologies, will be fundamental in the drive to reduce CO2 emissions globally."
Huawei says that it has always recognized the importance of environmental protection and has taken an active role in advancing green technologies. Shu Xihui, from the energy saving and emission reduction department at Huawei, said, "By working closely with stakeholders across the value chain through GeSI, Huawei moves closer to achieving its goal of 'Green Huawei, Green Communications, and a Green World'."
Established in 2001, GeSI is an international organization aiming to promote energy saving and emission reduction in the ICT industry. GeSI coordinates environmental protection policies and implementation measures in the global ICT industry, exerts its influences on the formulation of environmental protection standards and regulations, and promotes the development of the cause of environmental protection in the communication industry.
