Wang Li, vice chairperson and secretary general of Sanya Red Cross Society, has been removed from her duties for her rude attitude toward donors.
According to Sohu.com, a viral Internet video has been spreading online showing Wang shouting to a group of donors and asking for a 5% management fee for the donations they make. As the release of the video coincided with the Sichuan earthquake, many netizens think that Wang was trying to charge a management fee for the donations made for the earthquake relief. The video has seriously undermined the image of Hainan Provincial Red Cross Society, the supervisory agency of SRCS.
Zhao Weigu, a representative from HRCS, explained at a press conference that the video actually has nothing to do with the Sichuan earthquake, but is about a donation made in March 2008 for a little girl called Mai Tingting who suffered from a kidney disease. Zhao says that the 5% management fee mentioned by Wang in the video was not collected and 100% of the donation was actually used for Mai's treatment. However, in consideration of Wang's bad attitude in the video, which is against the core value of the Red Cross Society, HRCS suggested Wang be removed her from her duties.
Zhao says that HRCS pledges on behalf of all its affiliates across the province, that they will strictly follow the spirit of the Red Cross Society of China and spend all the funds donated for Sichuan earthquake on the earthquake relief without any deductions for other causes.
