China's State Council has established a Food Safety Commission according to the Food Safety Law of the People's Republic of China.
The main duties of the State Council Food Safety Commission — which is said to be a high level consulting and coordinating organization for food safety issues — are analyzing the food safety situation; guiding and coordinating food safety work; making food safety policies; and urging the relevant departments to fulfill their responsibilities in food supervision. Li Keqiang, the vice premier of the State Council, will work as director of FSC.
On the first meeting of FSC, Li Keqiang stated that food safety is closely related to people's health and safety as well as economic development and social harmony. Li pointed out that government at all levels should be responsible for the people and carry out the food safety law and its implementation rules in depth. Li stressed that a campaign will be carried out across the country in 2010 on food safety focusing on food additives, consumable agricultural products, food processing, food distribution and import and export, the processing of poultry, food consumption, and healthcare food. Regarding the melamine contaminated milk powder products currently circulating on the market, Li stated that all such products should be totally destroyed and the parties involved will be severely punished.
With the approach of the Chinese New Year, China has strengthened its efforts on food safety.
