Khalid Malik, the United Nations systems coordinator for China, has disclosed to local media that the UN hopes to set up a low carbon economy development center in Tianjin to address issues related to a low carbon economy and environmental protection.

Malik said that the UN hoped to carry out in depth cooperation with Tianjin on low carbon economy development, clean energy, and clean production to make the city a model for China's low carbon economy.

Alessandro Amadio, the officer in charge of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, said he hoped that Tianjin would incorporate this experience for developing and integrating a low carbon economy into its city planning, into sustainable consumption patterns, and into sustainable community development.

The coordinator of the UN Environment Programme China Office, stated that though China still faces many environmental problems, it still has a high potential for developing a low carbon economy and promoting a green economy. Zhang said that UNEP expects that China will bring its leadership into full play under the guidance of the UN and explore a new development road for the rest of the world.
