Starting from August 2009, Beijing has made the last Saturday of each month Renewable Resources Recycling Day.
On the RRRD, which aims to help the city realize its goal in classifying waste and reducing the quantity of waste, a professional team will go to local communities to collect renewable resources. On August 29, the first RRRD, two to three recycling sites were arranged in each district, offering information and providing consulting services on renewable resource recycle and domestic waste classification to encourage more people to join the initiative.
Beijing municipal government has made the disposal of domestic waste a basic public welfare undertaking and listed the recycling of renewable resources as part of its routine work in April this year to solve the ever increasing waste problem. To promote waste classification, the city is locating distributed classified containers and bags in 600 residential areas in addition to setting up ten kitchen waste disposal stations in major restaurant areas, college areas, and holiday resorts.
Beijing aims to realize waste classification among 10% of its permanent residents this year, focusing on kitchen waste. In addition, it plans to build 300 renewable resources recycling sites in the eight urban districts and complete the construction of 13 renewable resource selection centers.
