A green online game development base has been formally unveiled at the Shijingshan Science Park located within the Beijing Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park with the aim of spreading green online game culture, a spirit of self-discipline, and cracking down on unhealthy online behavior.
Zhou Jianshe, vice president of Capital Normal University, said that with technology development, online games have become an important part of people's lives. At the same time, they have some unhealthy content such as violence, gambling, and superstition. The establishment of the green online game base is of great significance to the development of the national games industry, the protection of children's health, and the purity of the online game environment.
It is expected that green online games will become major players in the games industry over the next five years. A report jointly published earlier this month by the Game Publication Working Committee of the Publishers Association of China and the international market research firm IDC, predicts that by 2013 shows the actual sales of China's online game industry will reach CNY39.76 billion and the compound growth rate from 2007 to 2013 will be 16.7%. The report shows that China's self-developed online games enlarged their competitive advantages over the past year and the actual sales of these games were CNY11.01 billion, accounting for 59.9% of the total sales and the sales increased by 60.0% compared with those of 2007.
At the same time, online games played an important role in promoting relevant industries in 2008. According to statistics, about CNY31.28 billion sales in China's telecom industry were directly brought by the online game industry, increasing 20% over the previous year; the number in the IT industry was CNY11.24 billion, increasing 15.0%; and that in the publication and media industry, mainly covering relevant magazines and books, was CNY5.32 billion, increasing 25%.
